Smith's practice involves counseling clients on intellectual property (IP) matters. He focuses primarily on patent prosecution, in which he has extensive experience in all phases of prosecution in both domestic and international matters. In addition, Smith has assisted a wide range of clients (small startups, mid-size companies, as well as multinational corporations) in managing their IP portfolios. Smith's work experience spans the engineering, science, and business arts with particular emphasis on software, artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning (natural language processing), computer networking (Wi-Fi), information technology (IT), cyber security, cloud technology, medical devices, financial technology, blockchain (inc. cryptocurrency), telecommunications, and consumer products.

Over the course of his legal career, Smith has had extensive experience in patent litigation matters. He has been involved in cases at the district and appellate court levels and has experience in pre-suit investigations, motion practice, appeal briefings, discovery, and expert reports. Further, Smith has also been involved in post-grant proceedings including inter partes review and ex parte reexamination matters.
